Abstract:
The aim of the research is to outline an ontology of air as an architectural material by exploring its representation in architectural drawings. The definition of air and our understanding of its role in our built environment has significantly shifted since the scientific and industrial revolutions. This epistemological transition of air has been closely tied to the way air is drawn in architectural drawings and to the development of new models of observation, simulation and prediction. The doctoral thesis will analyze these transitions by focusing on the emergence the evolution of the signs through which air is depicted: clouds, arrows and points.
