Architectural Analysis and Graphic Representation - Morphosis in the 1980s

Teaching unit ARCH-P8123 - Master 1 & 2
Teachers: Denis Derycke (coordinator), Michel Lefèvre

The Architectural Analysis and Graphic Representation module focuses on matching architectural analysis with the development of relevant graphic representations. It involves conducting a formal analysis of a given project based on one or more criteria, and then translating this analysis using appropriate graphic representation methods to best serve the discourse about the analyzed object. Similar to the American analytical approach of figures like Francis Ching or Peter Eisenman, this course aims to teach students how to “read” architectural geometry, understand formal language, and grasp the compositional rules of a project purely in terms of form. Additionally, students learn about architectural graphic representation tools within both historical and contemporary epistemological contexts, enabling them to use these tools effectively, and develop their own graphic universe.

2018-2019 theme
Exploration of compositional and representational systems, as well as conceptual artifacts from the 1980s work of the Californian group Morphosis.
